From Toxic to Essential and Beyond

Selenium as an essential nutrient has grown from being considered toxic 35 years ago to being of profound value in the prevention of the developing of many chronic health challenges. Selenium deficiencies have been implicated in a wide range of disease states including heart muscle weakness due to fibrosis, lung weakness due to fibrosis, fibrotic enlargment of the prostate gland, prostate cancer risk, fibrotic breast tissue changes. It is beneficial in providing essential nutrition in the management of fibrotic muscle tissue changes, tendon contractures and other fibrous conditions. Selenium acts to reduce microscopic formation of fibrotic cell changes in all tissues. The browning and drying of the skin in chronic seborrheic skin changes is associated with the oxidizing of ceroid lipofuscin, dramatically reduced by active supplementation with selenium.

A Potent Antioxidant, Depleted from our Food Supply

Selenium is essential in the production of glutathione, our most essential intracellular antioxidant.  In this sense, every cell is selenium dependent in order to maintain optimal reduced glutathione levels.   As our soil has become depleted in trace minerals, selenium levels all but been eradicated in our soil.   Selenium deficient soil was first identified in Pullman Washington.  The rain in the northwestern United States is associated with the leaching of selenium from our soil.  In the Hunan Province of China a selenium deficiency in the Providence was ultimately identified as the cause of an alarming incidence of cardiomyopathy (fibrotic cardiomyopathy) in newborn children.  This incidence was completely reversed by supplementing selenium to the entire Province.

    Quality and Bioavailability is Everything

Trace minerals like selenium can be difficult to absorb.  Studies have showed that sodium selenite is one of the best absorbed and most bioavailable forms, especially when in a liquid suspension.  Allergy Research's Selenium Solution delivers highly absorbable selenium as 100 mcg. of sodium slenite in 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mls.)  Each 8 ounce bottle delivers 96 servings of 100 mcg. of sodium selenite .  Do not exceed 400 mcg. of selenium per day from all dietary and supplemented sources.
